Conditional Sentences; Zero, Type I,II,III


Conditional Sentences


a.    Zero Conditional Sentence
“ This type of conditional sentence used to discuss the result and the condition which is always true, like scientific facts.”

If + simple present tense, simple present tense
(If + S + V1+ O, S + V1+ O)

Example.
·      If you burn paper, it turns to ash. Or,
·      Paper turns to ash if you burn it.

b.        Conditional Sentence Type I
“ This type of conditional sentence used to discuss the future result if the condition is fulfilled.

If + simple present tense, simple future tense.
(If + S + V1+ O, S + Will + Verb 1+ O)
Example.
·      If he gives me the invitation, I will come to his party. Or,
·      I will come to his party if he gives me the invitation.

c.         Conditional Sentence Type II
“ This type of conditional sentence used to talk about unrealistic possibility in the present, such as wish or dream.


If +Simple past tense, past future tense.
(If + S + V2 + O, S + Would + Verb 1 + O)
In this type of conditional sentence, for simple past tense, to be used is only “were”.
Examples.
·      If she was were in that room, she would see the picture.
·      If I were a teacher, I would teach them. Or,
·      I would teach them if I were a teacher.

d.        Conditional Sentence Type III
“ This type of conditional sentence usually used to talk about regret, an action which is not fulfilled in the past, and it can not be change anymore.

If + Past perfect tense, Past future perfect tense.
(If + S + Had + V3 + O, S + Would have + V3 + O)
Examples.
·      If he had invited me, I would have come to the party. Or,
·      I would have come to the party if he had invited me.


EXERCISE II

8.        If she                                (rich), she would travel around the world.
9.        She would have understood her English teacher if she                             (speak) slowly.
10.    If my headache disappeared, I                              (play) tennis this morning.
11.    If today                             (be) Sunday, we could go to the beach.
12.    If you                    (heat) the water to 100C, it                (boil).
13.    We                                    .(do) our work if our computer had not broken down.
14.    Roni could win the competition if he…………………(practice) more.
15.    They would have lost their bag if they                              .(leave) it in the hotel.
